Catches win matches
This weekend saw Buckie Cricket Club travel to Inverness to take on Highland at the Fraser Park, in a thirty over cup match sponsored by Tosh and Carole. Buckie lost the toss and so were asked to bat first on a damp, cold overcast day on a wicket which was to offer a lot of help to the bowlers.
Corsie and Baker opened the batting and it was not long before E Walls was invited to the crease. Shortly after this with the score on 14 the inform batsman of the last few weeks was striding to the crease, Buckie at this stage on 14 for 2. Wilson and Corsie so often a force for Buckie were also quickly separated with Wilson calling for a quick two, but leaving Corsie short of his ground and out for 8 runs.
By this time nerves were beginning to show and no one was able to keep Wilson company for long, as he made his way to the highest score of the match. Wilson finally being dismissed for 39 caught of a lofted drive. No other batsman managed to get into double figures, with the second highest score going to extras. Buckie’s final score of 79 all out seemed a long way short of what would be necessary.
Highland began their response in exactly the same way Buckie did, with Nixon being dismissed with the score only on one run and when Choukse was run out with the score on 20 the difficult batting conditions gave hope to Buckie. However a series of dropped catches was to undo Buckie’s efforts with most batsmen being given at least one chance. E Walls showed the bowlers how to make the best of the wicket though, with his slow spin bamboozling the batsman. He got the dangerous Highland Captain, Crabtree, stumped by Curran. Also Somney, again assisted by Curran except this time caught, Somney was determined to play the reverse sweep and credit to the wicket keeper for standing tall for the catch. E Walls finishing with 2 wickets for just 8 runs in his six overs.
During this spell of bowling by Walls any result was on, but then those slippery hands were shown, and the batsman took those second chances to make some scores, not big scores with Crabtree being the highest scorer for Highland with 20, but three batsman reached double figures, and this spelt disaster for Buckie. Highland reached the total of 80 for just the loss of five wickets. The other unsavory statistic being Buckie conceding 14 extras .
A good win for Highland as they proceed in the cup, but the old coaching ditty is catches win matches, and who knows what the result would have been if Buckie held those catches. Next week Buckie first eleven have two matches, on Saturday they travel to Ross County in a match sponsored by Gourmet’s Choice Ltd and an away game in the Small Clubs Cup against Kismet sponsored by E O Corsie MBE
